Overview | The term “good” was not used without intention, because it is based on the idea that stories could build good or less good nurses in the sense that situations encountered in practice can influence the assistant’s ability to manage the emotions generated by the situations they face in the clinical practice. In fact, we start from the idea that the significant stories encountered in clinical practice could influence the construction of their own professional realities, but at the same time, these personal constructions can contribute to the social image of the nursing profession. The way in which future nurses build their own reality can sabotage the development of their professional identity if we consider those situations from clinical practice that could undermine their abilities as nurses by anchoring them in emotionally destabilizing stories, over which it might overlap speeches specific to the profession. Canário (2005; Nunes Sera, 2008) considers that the profession of nurse is a “difficult construction”, taking into account the beginning context of the profession and the actions prescribed for the role of a nurse.
Starting from the fact that there are no prescriptions on how to react exactly for students in nursing, the question which arises is how much of their reactions can be explained by social patterns encountered, role prescriptions, or how people are taught to build their own life stories, in accordance with certain values promoted by the social environment in which they develop, and which are the speeches in our cultural and specifically the medical field that could contribute to the building of professional identity to future nurses.
